TLOU:PartII: The Games to Rule Playstation

This is one of the four games Playstation will focus more on during their Playstation E3 Press Conference, a deep dive is to be expected and much more information will be revealed. will keep you up to date! This is the third piece for: The Games to Rule Playstation-series.

The Last of Us: Part II

“-Oh no, not another zombie game”, you might say. This is not just another zombie game, or ordinary game for that matter. This is The Last of Us: Part II.

This game is a sequel to the extremely well-regarded first installment which released for the PlayStation 3 in 2013, and was held to such regard Playstation decided to release a remastered version for the Playstation 4 and enhanced the game for the Playstation 4 Pro (better shadows, 4K resolution, 60 fps mode among other enhancements).

The developer Naughty Dog follows suit with this reputation, which only increases the already high expectations people have. The game was revealed at PSX2017:

The crowd was in a frenzy during the event, and social media blew up in anticipation of what’s to come.

The Last of Us is taking place in a post-apocalyptic setting, where human kind fights every day for survival ever since the contagion (fungi) started to spread and infect humans.

The main character is Joel. Slightly older man from Texas, with a great loss which haunts him and affects his relationships with other characters. The other character is Ellie, a younger girl with no parents around. Strong willed and one of the best characters I’ve ever seen in a game. To not spoil the first game, I will not go into detail as to what happens besides that, Joel and Ellie’s journey together takes them westward and the game starts in Boston for the two main characters.

The new game:

The Last of Us Part II is set to take place a couple of years after the first game. Ellie is said to be around 19 years of age. In the reveal trailer we can see her playing a guitar, with an appearance of Joel who enters the building that she’s in. Along with a lot of bodies on the floor. This goes hand in hand with the description creative director Neil Druckmann used, in regards to what theme this game could best be described with. Hate. If the first game could be described with love, hate is the apt description for this title. Ellie’s anger could be heard in the reveal trailer, “I’m going to find, and I’m going to kill, every last one of them”.

That line could refer to the group “the Fireflies” which Ellie has a strong connection with but could also be an enemy faction we never have heard about before. There is too many unknowns to draw a reasonable conclusion.

As the game is definitely single player with a strong narrative focus, we can expect twists and turns, unlikely allies and backstabbing, friend turn to foe. This series sacrifices characters similar to the TV-show Game of Thrones. Everyone can be killed, with so many threats at every turn, death is always present. And this game seems to have doubled down on the gritty and grounded feeling the first game had. This is a dark title, so we should expect hardcore violence since the characters are fighting for survival and there is still shitty people in the world, even after an apocalypse.

The trailer showcases a female, which plenty of people have guessed to be Ellie’s mom. And that she is pregnant with Ellie.

The woman is tough, ripped and looks like she’s lived through pretty hard times.

We also get acquainted with two younger characters as well, Yara and Lev. How they connect with this woman is unknown, but bodes for an interesting story. Since the trailer clearly shows that Lev does not really want to help the woman, could this be an indicator of the woman’s allegiances or history?

The game will take place in Seattle, according to the developer and was confirmed during the latest Playstation Experience:

I highly recommend that you watch both the trailers, but mostly the panel discussion since so much is told and revealed. The humor is a plus, and you get to know the people behind the characters which helps you understand them better, or at least get a different perspective.

I cannot express how much I want to play this game. I have played through the first game at least 5 times by now. On different difficulty settings. I can also not recommend that you play the new game before you have played the first one. It is one of the best games I have ever played. A masterpiece and genre defining. The developer is the gold standard for game development, and all eyes will be peeled towards this game during E3. The level of graphical detail, and character development is almost unmatched, a top-tier developer.

Expect to cover TLOU Part II and give you the latest details!

The game is an action/adventure 3rd person title, and is rumored to be released in 2019. The developer is Naughty Dog and this is the second installment to the series.
